Keys to Independence (K2I) is a program funded by MODOT that helps youth in out-of-home care obtain their driver’s permit and license by removing financial barriers related to driving costs and fees.
In 2024, K2I transitioned to the FLITE Center (Fort Lauderdale Independence, Training & Education)—a nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that no young person navigates the road to adulthood alone. FLITE supports youth aging out of foster care, as well as other vulnerable young adults, by providing guidance in housing, education, employment, health and wellness, and coordinated care.
Together, Keys to Independence and FLITE proudly support Missouri’s mission and the Show-Me Zero initiative by recognizing that true independence requires a driver’s license and safe driving skills. We encourage behind-the-wheel lessons to prepare Missouri youth to be confident, responsible drivers.
K2I covers the following expenses:
Permit fees
Driver’s license fees
Driving lessons
Car rental for the road exam
